Overcast skies today, with a gentle ripple from the SW with the glass slipping lower. Fish at Cole Ponds should hold close to the shallows early and the drop later. The forecast is against you; the night is the least bad option. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly.

Cole Ponds is one of the Phillips County listings for Montana. Elevation runs to 2,159 feet. The water measures roughly 9 acres, so nothing here is far from anything else. Our Phillips County list holds plenty of bigger water. Start from Malta, 23 miles down the road. Regina sits 183 miles out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. The arms fish better than the open middle whenever the water is up. Held water runs deepest at the wall and shallows back to the inflow. County-wide records name black crappie, northern pike and rainbow trout. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. Work Cole Ponds in sections rather than trying to cover it.
In an average year July sits at 69°F and January at 11°F. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Winter locks it down, and early April brings it back. Ice clears near early April and comes back about late November in a typical year. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Expect Cole Ponds to follow that timing.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. The water borders MT FWP, so expect the reserve rules to apply. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Hewitt Lake, 5.7 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Nothing here settles the position at Cole Ponds for certain.
