A grey, even sky over the water, with a light WSW breeze and the barometer heading up. Give points where shallow meets deep the first hour at Cliff Lake. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the night. Lower the pace and stay patient. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Cliff Lake lies in Flathead County, Montana. The water sits 3,064 feet up. A pocket of water where every cast reaches cover. On size it sits at the modest end of our Flathead County list. Nearest place of any size is Whitefish, 7 miles away. Lethbridge sits 119 miles out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. Rules here are straightforward: one county, one set of rules.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. County-wide records name rainbow trout, sockeye salmon and largemouth bass. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. On Cliff Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Averages here run 63°F at the top of summer and 22°F at the bottom of winter. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near early April. The season between ice runs from about early April to late November. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Cliff Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
The access position is unclear from public sources. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. A phone call first saves an afternoon. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. If the gate is shut, Northwestern Lake at 0.6 miles is the nearest alternative. Treat access at Cliff Lake as something to verify.
