A clear night sky over the water, with almost no wind to speak of and pressure ticking upward. The water to cover at Shumate Lake is sheltered bays and points. The night should out-fish the rest of the day. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Shumate Lake is one of the Johnson County listings for Missouri. Height above sea level is 764 feet. This is a pocket water of some 3 acres, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. Most waters listed here for Johnson County are larger. Start from Knob Noster, 3.9 miles down the road. It is 45 miles to East Independence, the nearest city. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Look for where the old bank line still shows under the surface. Standing timber shows when the level drops, and fish sit against it. Species logged across Johnson County include bluegill, orangethroat darter and green sunfish. The county list is broader than any single water. At Shumate Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Between January at about 27°F and July at about 78°F, the water has a wide range to work through. The year turns gently, without extremes at either end. It should never be assumed safe, whatever the month says. February into May fishes hardest as the water warms. Shumate Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Clear Fork Lake, 3.5 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Nothing here settles the position at Shumate Lake for certain.
