A grey, even sky over the water, with a helpful ripple pushed from the NW with the barometer flat. Start the search at Sunset Lake along the weed line and any gaps in it. If you must go, go in the middle of the day. Keep baits small and presentations quiet. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Sunset Lake lies within the bounds of Saint Louis County, Minnesota. What surrounds it is mixed forest. It measures some 301 acres, and wind has room to build across it. There is roughly 3.3 miles of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. Few waters listed in Saint Louis County are bigger. For supplies, Mountain Iron is 29 miles out. Further out sit Parkville (29 miles) and Virginia (30 miles). One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
Our records hold no depth for this water. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Saint Louis County records list yellow perch, northern pike, white sucker, rainbow trout and walleye among the fish reported. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Read Sunset Lake before you fish it and the day goes better.
Climate records put July near 65°F and January near 5°F. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around late April. Ice usually gives way near late April, and forms again about mid November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Anyone fishing Sunset Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. If the gate is shut, Black Lake at 2.1 miles is the nearest alternative. Confirm access to Sunset Lake locally before you travel.
