A bright day with hardly any cloud, with a soft WNW wind and pressure on the rise. The water to cover at Summit Lake is points where shallow meets deep. The best of it runs morning through afternoon. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Murray County, Minnesota, is where Summit Lake sits. Height above sea level is 1,677 feet. With some 73 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Shoreline comes to about 1.4 miles, small enough to learn in a day. Compared with other Minnesota water on our list, it sits high. The nearest town is Slayton, 5.2 miles away. Then Fulda, 16 miles, and Edgerton, 16 miles. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Fish documented in Murray County include common carp, walleye, black bullhead, yellow perch and black crappie. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Read Summit Lake before you fish it and the day goes better.
Typical July readings run about 71°F; by January the average is down near 12°F. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around early April. The water is typically free of ice between early April and late November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Summit Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. For walleye, a jig and minnow near the bottom is the standard; evenings beat middays. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. The nearest alternative is Lake Wilson, 4.2 miles out. Check the current arrangement for Summit Lake.
