Heavy overcast holding through the day, with the surface near flat as pressure slides. The productive water at Stony Lake will be around sheltered bays and points. Save your energy for the evening. Change depth before you change anything else. The cold puts a premium on the calmest, deepest water.

Stony Lake lies in Lake County, in Minnesota. The country here is rolling bush. About 248 acres, so local knowledge or a boat saves a lot of walking. Around 7.5 miles of bank, which is a long day on foot. On our Lake County list it sits near the top for size. For a base, Babbitt sits 16 miles out. Beyond it, Ely at 23 miles and Hoyt Lakes at 25 miles. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Records held for Lake County cover white sucker, yellow perch, northern pike and rainbow trout. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. At Stony Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Between January at about 4°F and July at about 64°F, the water has a wide range to work through. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. The lid usually goes in late April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. From about late April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Plan any trip to Stony Lake around it.
Our records carry no access rule either way. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Wampus Lake sits 1.8 miles off and takes the overflow. Ask locally about Stony Lake if anything is unclear.
