Bands of rain crossing through the day, with stillness over the whole water and pressure ticking upward. Give the calm side of the wind the first hour at Splash Lake. The strongest window runs from night into morning. Keep expectations modest and fish carefully. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Lake County, Minnesota, is where Splash Lake sits. The water sits 1,345 feet up. Around 93 acres of surface means several distinct areas to work. The bank runs about 1.6 miles all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Ely at 23 miles is the nearest place to stop. For a city, Thunder Bay is 103 miles off. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Open biodiversity records for Lake County list white sucker, yellow perch, northern pike and rainbow trout. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. At Splash Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
The year swings from about 4°F in January to roughly 65°F in July. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. After late April the shallows warm and the fish move up. In an average year the thaw lands around late April and the freeze near late November. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. It holds true on Splash Lake more years than not.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Overnight stays are possible about half a mile out, where camping is mapped. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Failing this one, try Spigot Lake, 0.6 miles away. For Splash Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
