Snider Lake is one of the Mahnomen County waters in Minnesota. Everything around it is pine and birch. This is sizeable water at about 614 acres, and a boat opens up most of it. There is roughly 5.0 miles of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. It ranks high for size among our Mahnomen County listings. Nearest place of any size is Mahnomen, 16 miles away. Beyond it, Bagley at 26 miles and Fosston at 26 miles. The line between counties passes nearby, which can change who manages the water.
The basin drops to a measured 33 feet. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Survey and observation records for Mahnomen County include rainbow trout, white sucker, northern pike and bluegill. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. The near bank of Snider Lake is often the one people ignore.
Average temperature peaks around 68°F in July and bottoms out near 4°F in January. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough mid April. The open-water window runs from around mid April to about mid November in an average year. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Snider Lake.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. The nearest alternative is Mike Lake, 1 mile out. Confirm access to Snider Lake locally before you travel.
