Wet weather working through today, with barely a breath of wind and no real change in pressure. The water to cover at Skoota Lake is structure within a cast of the bank. The numbers single out the night. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Skoota Lake is a Lake County water, in Minnesota. The setting is pine and birch. It runs to roughly 128 acres — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Bank access stretches around 2.0 miles in total. The closest town, Ely, is 31 miles distant. Babbitt follows at 40 miles, then Grand Marais at 48 miles. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Lake County records list white sucker, yellow perch, northern pike, rainbow trout and walleye among the fish reported. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. On Skoota Lake a short move beats a long cast.
Expect July near 65°F and January near 4°F on the long-run figures. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. Ice usually gives way near late April, and forms again about late November. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Skoota Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
The access position is unclear from public sources. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Overnight stays are possible about half a mile out, where camping is mapped. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Failing this one, try Grubstake Lake, 0.4 miles away. Rules at Skoota Lake are worth checking on the day.
