A clear night sky over the water, with a faint SSW drift with a settled glass. The water to cover at Schilling Lake is the weed line and any gaps in it. The strongest window runs from the day. Stay mobile and follow the activity. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Schilling Lake sits in Sibley County, out in Minnesota. It stands 978 feet above sea level. About 552 acres, so local knowledge or a boat saves a lot of walking. With 8.3 miles or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. Ground here is low by Minnesota standards. The town to know is Glencoe, 5.8 miles out. Minneapolis sits 50 miles out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. A border sits close enough to be relevant to the paperwork.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Public occurrence data for Sibley County names green sunfish, white sucker and black bullhead. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. On Schilling Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
On the long-term average, July reads 72°F and January reads 11°F. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Winter locks it down, and early April brings it back. Climate figures give an open season running early April to late November. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. It holds true on Schilling Lake more years than not.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. If the gate is shut, High Island Lake at 2 miles is the nearest alternative. Rules at Schilling Lake are worth checking on the day.
