Changeable light under scattered cloud, with flat calm through the day as pressure slides. On Scalp Lake, work inflow corners and shaded margins first. The day fishes best from night into morning. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Set in Otter Tail County, Minnesota, this is Scalp Lake. The bank is 1,355 feet above sea level. It runs to roughly 246 acres — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. A shoreline of some 2.4 miles keeps the choices simple. The nearest town is Frazee, 4.4 miles away. Beyond it, Detroit Lakes at 9.1 miles and Perham at 12 miles. Local rules may differ a few miles either side of here.
The basin has been measured to about 102 feet. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Open biodiversity records for Otter Tail County list largemouth bass, black crappie, walleye, bluegill and yellow perch. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Scalp Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
July runs about 69°F on average, January about 5°F. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Ice is part of the season here, ending near mid April. The lid tends to go about mid April and return around late November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. At Scalp Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
No access rule appears in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. If the gate is shut, Little Rose Lake at 0.8 miles is the nearest alternative. Nothing here settles the position at Scalp Lake for certain.
