A half-and-half sky over the water today, with an easy breeze from the SSW and pressure easing off. Most of the action on Sand Lake should come off the seam between weed and open water. The best of it runs night into morning. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Sand Lake falls in Wadena County, part of Minnesota. Height above sea level is 1,270 feet. At about 55 acres, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. There is roughly 1.2 miles of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. The closest town, Staples, is 13 miles distant. Wadena lies 18 miles off, Menahga another 21 miles. This one sits near enough to a boundary to be worth checking.
We hold no depth figure for this one. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. County-wide records name black crappie, northern pike, largemouth bass and walleye. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. On Sand Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Long-run averages give July about 69°F and January about 6°F. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Ice-out usually falls in mid April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. The season between ice runs from about mid April to late November. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. On Sand Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Access is not recorded for this water. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Farnham Lake at 2.3 miles is the sensible second choice. None of that is settled for Sand Lake in what we hold.
