A sharp, clear morning turning into a bright day, with a steady SW wind with the glass slipping lower. The productive water at Sand Lake will be around windblown banks where food collects. The useful hours run night into morning. Trust the forecast and stay out through the window. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Minnesota holds Sand Lake, in Otter Tail County. The bank is 1,322 feet above sea level. With some 129 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. About 2.6 miles of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. Head to Pelican Rapids, 4.8 miles away, for anything you forgot. It is 39 miles to Fargo, the nearest city. Local rules may differ a few miles either side of here.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Across Otter Tail County, recorded fish include largemouth bass, black crappie, walleye, bluegill and yellow perch. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Take Sand Lake a stretch at a time.
July runs about 69°F on average, January about 6°F. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. The lid usually goes in mid April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. The open-water window runs from around mid April to about late November in an average year. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Sand Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
We hold no note on access for this one. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Putnam WPA runs up to the bank here, which usually means extra restrictions. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Tamarack Lake, 2.1 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. What applies at Sand Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
