Fresh rain topping the water up today, with a gentle ripple from the ESE with the glass slipping lower. The productive water at Rum Lake will be around any hard bottom among the soft. The night carries the best of the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Rum Lake is one of the Itasca County listings for Minnesota. The bank is 1,375 feet above sea level. With some 30 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Around 1.2 miles of margin, front to back. Chisholm is the closest town at 32 miles. Fargo is the closest city, 176 miles away. Water in the same corner: Mead Lake 0.6 miles, Trible Lake 0.6 miles off, Crum Lake 0.6 miles, Little Island Lake 0.8 miles off and Coppersmith Lake 0.9 miles. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. County-wide records name yellow perch, largemouth bass, northern pike and bluegill. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Work Rum Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Expect July to average close to 66°F, with January the cold end at about 5°F. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. The lid usually goes in late April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. The lid tends to go about late April and return around mid November. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. The season on Rum Lake rarely departs from it.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. The nearest alternative is Mead Lake, 0.6 miles out. Nothing on Rum Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
