Overcast skies today, with a busy SSW wind on the open water as pressure slides. Expect most activity at Rice Lake around structure within a cast of the bank. One clear peak today: the morning. Slow down and let the fish find the bait. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Rice Lake lies within the bounds of Beltrami County, Minnesota. Beyond the shoreline you have rolling bush. Small at around 23 acres: two anglers spread out cover most of it. On size it sits at the modest end of our Beltrami County list. Redby is the closest place, 11 miles off. Further out sit Red Lake (11 miles) and Little Rock (13 miles). No boundary runs near, so the county rules hold throughout.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Open biodiversity records for Beltrami County list walleye, yellow perch, northern pike, largemouth bass and white sucker. The county list is broader than any single water. Treat Rice Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 67°F, while January sits near 3°F. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around mid April. From about mid April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. The season on Rice Lake follows the weather closely.
Our records carry no access rule either way. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. George Lake sits 0.8 miles off and takes the overflow. Treat access at Rice Lake as something to verify.
