Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with a light chop building from the SSW with pressure dropping. Whatever swims in Rat Lake should be near structure within a cast of the bank. A long productive spell runs night into morning. Make the first hour count and build on it. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Rat Lake lies in Crow Wing County, in Minnesota. The setting is pine and birch on every side. At about 90 acres, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The full circuit measures close to 1.7 miles on foot. The closest town, Pequot Lakes, is 5.2 miles away. After that come Breezy Point at 7.5 miles and Crosslake at 9.5 miles. A border sits close enough to be relevant to the paperwork.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Records held for Crow Wing County cover largemouth bass, bluegill, yellow perch, northern pike and pumpkinseed. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. Rat Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
Climate normals give 68°F for July and 7°F for January. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near mid April. Ice usually gives way near mid April, and forms again about late November. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. That is the shape of the year on Rat Lake.
No access rule appears in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. A phone call first saves an afternoon. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Nelson Lake sits 1.5 miles off and takes the overflow. Nothing on Rat Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
