Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with light air out of the NW and pressure leaking away. Start the search at Pomme de Terre Lake along points where shallow meets deep. The evening carries the best of the day. Change depth before you change anything else. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Pomme de Terre Lake is one of the Grant County waters in Minnesota. The setting is lake country bush on every side. The water covers around 2.8 sq miles, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. With 13 miles or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. On our Grant County list it sits near the top for size. Elbow Lake is the closest place, 4.9 miles off. Beyond it, Fergus Falls at 20 miles and Alexandria at 26 miles. Rules here are straightforward: one county, one set of rules.
The deepest measured water here is close to 26 feet. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Grant County records list common carp, largemouth bass, walleye, bluegill and yellow perch among the fish reported. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. The near bank of Pomme de Terre Lake is often the one people ignore.
Long-term averages put July at about 70°F and January near 8°F. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Look for the thaw near mid April; the fishing lifts straight after. Expect the water usable from around mid April until roughly late November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Pomme de Terre Lake.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Part of this sits inside or beside Pomme De Terre WPA, so read the notices. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. For a change of water, Shady Grove Lake is 1.6 miles distant. Signs at Pomme de Terre Lake carry more weight than any list.
