Overcast skies today, with a light chop building from the NW as pressure slides. Most of the action on North Turtle Lake should come off the shaded margin through bright spells. Make the evening the heart of the trip. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

North Turtle Lake is one of the Otter Tail County waters in Minnesota. It stands 1,312 feet above sea level. The water covers around 2.4 sq miles, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. Shoreline length is close to 15 miles, and each section fishes a little differently. Few waters listed in Otter Tail County are bigger. Fergus Falls is the closest town at 13 miles. Then Pelican Rapids, 23 miles, and Perham, 23 miles. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Depth records show about 22 feet at the bottom of the basin. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Reported across Otter Tail County: largemouth bass, black crappie, walleye, bluegill and yellow perch. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. On North Turtle Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Long-run averages give July about 70°F and January about 7°F. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Winter locks it down, and mid April brings it back. Break-up near mid April, freeze-up near late November: that is the shape of an average year. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Expect North Turtle Lake to follow that timing.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is a mapped slipway roughly half a mile away. The closest car park is half a mile away, so pack accordingly. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Failing this one, try South Turtle Lake, 1.7 miles away. Signs at North Turtle Lake carry more weight than any list.
