Dull, settled light over the water, with a gentle ripple from the SSW with the glass slipping lower. Mud Lake should fish best around shallow cover and weed edges today. Plan around the stretch from night into morning. Keep moving until you find them. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Mud Lake sits within Wadena County in Minnesota. This is pine and birch country. Small at around 21 acres: two anglers spread out cover most of it. There is roughly 1.1 miles of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Wadena County. Some 11 miles away sits Menahga, the nearest settlement. The nearest city of size is Fargo, 91 miles away. The boundary is close enough to be worth checking before you fish.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. County-wide records name black crappie, northern pike, largemouth bass and walleye. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Fish Mud Lake where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
Long-term averages put July at about 68°F and January near 5°F. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about mid April. Averages suggest open water from about mid April through to roughly late November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Plan any trip to Mud Lake around it.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. The nearest alternative is Palmer Lake, 1.6 miles out. None of that is settled for Mud Lake in what we hold.
