An even grey lid over the water, with a gentle ripple from the SSW and a rising glass. Most of the action on Mud Lake should come off any hard bottom among the soft. Expect the better fishing from night into morning. Give the likely spots time before moving. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Mud Lake sits in Morrison County, out in Minnesota. The bank gives way to mixed forest. Roughly 33 acres: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The nearest place of any size is Little Falls, 6 miles away. Pierz lies 11 miles off, Royalton another 15 miles. Within a short drive: Green Prairie Fish Lake within 4.5 miles, Anderson Lake (5.2 miles), Pelkey Lake within 5.4 miles, Popple Lake (6.2 miles) and Frieze Lake within 6.6 miles. This one is safely inside the county line.
Nothing in our records gives a depth for this one. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Public occurrence data for Morrison County names largemouth bass, bluegill, northern pike, black crappie and yellow perch. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. On Mud Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
Averages here run 70°F at the top of summer and 9°F at the bottom of winter. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. The lid usually goes in mid April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. On average, mid April opens the water and late November closes it again. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. At Mud Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
No access rule appears in what we hold. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Green Prairie Fish Lake at 4.5 miles is the sensible second choice. Signs at Mud Lake carry more weight than any list.
