Overcast skies today, with a soft SE wind and pressure leaking away. The water to cover at Mud Lake is the seam between weed and open water. A long productive spell runs night into morning. Make the first hour count and build on it. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Set in Isanti County, Mud Lake is a Minnesota water. The bank gives way to rolling bush. Surface area is around 81 acres, which gives you real water without needing a boat. With about 2.0 miles of edge, you can try several depths in one session. Ground here is low by Minnesota standards. Nearest town is Cambridge, 6.3 miles off. After that come Braham at 6.3 miles and Isanti at 12 miles. You are close to a county edge here; who manages the access can change within a short drive.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Isanti County records list largemouth bass, yellow perch, bluegill, common carp and northern pike among the fish reported. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. On Mud Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Average temperature peaks around 70°F in July and bottoms out near 9°F in January. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. After early April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Averages place the thaw at early April and the freeze at late November. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. The season on Mud Lake rarely departs from it.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Adams Lake sits 1.1 miles off and takes the overflow. Check the position at Mud Lake before loading the car.
