A grey, even sky over the water, with light air out of the SE and pressure going nowhere. The fish at Mud Lake are likely to sit near the seam between weed and open water. Expect the better fishing from afternoon into evening. Give the likely spots time before moving. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Mud Lake lies in Becker County, Minnesota. This is rolling bush ground. Around 42 acres of surface means several distinct areas to work. Start from Detroit Lakes, 10 miles down the road. Frazee follows at 12 miles, then Perham at 21 miles. Within a short run: Hanson Lake some 0.7 miles off, South Tamarac Lake (0.9 miles), Pine Lake some 1.6 miles off, Evans Lake (1.8 miles) and Cotton Lake some 2 miles off. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Fish documented in Becker County include bluegill, largemouth bass and walleye. The county list is broader than any single water. Mud Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
On the long-term average, July reads 68°F and January reads 4°F. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near mid April. Climate figures give an open season running mid April to mid November. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. On Mud Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. There is a slipway on the shore, half a mile from the water we list. A carry of half a mile from the nearest parking is the price of fishing here. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Hanson Lake at 0.7 miles is the sensible second choice. For Mud Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
