A sharp, clear morning turning into a bright day, with a mirror surface most of the day and the barometer on the way down. The productive water at Mill Lake will be around windblown banks where food collects. The night should out-fish the rest of the day. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones.

Mill Lake is one of the Todd County waters in Minnesota. Everything around it is pine and birch. With some 160 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Shoreline comes to about 2.4 miles, small enough to learn in a day. Few waters listed in Todd County are bigger. Long Prairie is the closest place, 7.1 miles off. Little Falls lies 19 miles off, Staples another 22 miles. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Across Todd County, recorded fish include largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie and northern pike. The county list is broader than any single water. Fish Mill Lake where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
Average temperature peaks around 69°F in July and bottoms out near 9°F in January. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about mid April. The lid tends to go about mid April and return around late November. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. At Mill Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Little Mill Lake at 0.6 miles is the sensible second choice. Confirm access to Mill Lake locally before you travel.
