An even grey lid over the water, with stillness over the whole water and no real change in pressure. Marathon Lake should fish best around any hard bottom among the soft today. The evening should out-fish the rest of the day. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Marathon Lake is listed under Lake County, Minnesota. It lies 1,519 feet above sea level. With some 35 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. With about 0.9 miles of edge, you can try several depths in one session. Ely sits 23 miles from the bank. After that come Babbitt at 28 miles and Silver Bay at 38 miles. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Across Lake County, recorded fish include white sucker, yellow perch, northern pike, rainbow trout and walleye. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. Anyone new to Marathon Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Averages move between 4°F in January and 65°F in July. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. Winter locks it down, and late April brings it back. Average temperatures cross freezing around late April in spring and again near late November in autumn. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Marathon Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Our records carry no access rule either way. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. For a change of water, Wagner Lake is 0.6 miles distant. None of that is settled for Marathon Lake in what we hold.
