Full sun on the water today, with hardly a ripple anywhere as pressure slides. On Lower Whipple Lake, work bays that hold the day's warmth first. The day fishes best from night into morning. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Set in Crow Wing County, Lower Whipple Lake is a Minnesota water. It sits at 1,184 feet above sea level. Around 156 acres of surface means several distinct areas to work. Bank access stretches around 2.0 miles in total. Baxter at 1.6 miles is the nearest place to stop. East Gull Lake lies 3.9 miles off, Brainerd another 5 miles. You are close to a county edge here; who manages the access can change within a short drive.
The deepest measured water here is close to 33 feet. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. County-wide records name largemouth bass, bluegill, yellow perch and northern pike. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. Fish Lower Whipple Lake where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
Expect July near 70°F and January near 8°F on the long-run figures. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Ice-out usually falls in mid April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Expect the water usable from around mid April until roughly late November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. On Lower Whipple Lake that shapes the whole year.
Our records carry no access rule either way. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Launching is possible: a slipway lies half a mile off. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Little Whipple Lake at 0.6 miles is the sensible second choice. For Lower Whipple Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
