Stars out and no cloud tonight, with flat calm through the day and pressure on the rise. The water to cover at Loon Lake is reed fringes and open pockets. Block out the hours from morning through afternoon. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

The Waseca County end of Minnesota holds Loon Lake. This is lake country bush ground. It runs to roughly 123 acres — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The whole outline is near 2.0 miles, and most of it is walkable. Waseca lies 0.6 miles from the water. For a city, Rochester is 52 miles off. This one sits near enough to a boundary to be worth checking.
The basin has been measured to about 9.2 feet. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Fish documented in Waseca County include largemouth bass, bluegill, black bullhead and common carp. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Loon Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Expect July to average close to 71°F, with January the cold end at about 12°F. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around early April. Climate figures give an open season running early April to early December. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Anyone fishing Loon Lake regularly works to that calendar.
We hold no note on access for this one. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. There is recorded parking some half a mile off. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Clear Lake sits 1.7 miles off and takes the overflow. Signs at Loon Lake carry more weight than any list.
