Steady rain over the water today, with a persistent wind from the NNW and the barometer heading up. The productive water at Leo Lake will be around bays that hold the day's warmth. A stay-home graph, with the evening as the one excuse to go. Scale down and fish slowly. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

This water sits in Polk County, Minnesota. Height above sea level is 1,181 feet. With some 34 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Supplies mean a trip to Fosston, 15 miles off. Then Red Lake Falls, 20 miles, and Mahnomen, 22 miles. What else is close: Island Lake at 0.5 miles, Eighteen Lake within 0.7 miles, Crystal Lake at 1.6 miles, Bee Lake within 1.9 miles and Union Lake at 1.9 miles. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Across Polk County, recorded fish include yellow perch, brown bullhead and white sucker. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. At Leo Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Climate normals give 68°F for July and 4°F for January. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. Once it clears, about mid April, the fishing comes on quickly. Average temperatures cross freezing around mid April in spring and again near mid November in autumn. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Plan any trip to Leo Lake around it.
We hold no note on access for this one. A car park sits roughly half a mile away. Dorr Wildlife Management Area covers this ground, which means extra rules to check. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. The nearest alternative is Island Lake, 0.5 miles out. None of that is settled for Leo Lake in what we hold.
