Broken cloud drifting past the moon tonight, with an easy breeze from the WNW and the barometer holding steady. The fish at Legat Lake are likely to sit near reed fringes and open pockets. If you pick one session, make it the evening. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Set in Lake County, Legat Lake is a Minnesota water. The land about it is lake country bush. At 15 acres it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Lake County. Grand Marais lies 32 miles from the water. After that come Silver Bay at 35 miles and Ely at 41 miles. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth figures are not published for this one. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Reported across Lake County: white sucker, yellow perch, northern pike, rainbow trout and walleye. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. On Legat Lake the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Climate normals give 64°F for July and 5°F for January. The freeze arrives properly here and holds. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from late April. Ice clears near late April and comes back about mid November in a typical year. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. It holds true on Legat Lake more years than not.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Last Lake at 0.9 miles is the sensible second choice. For Legat Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
