An even grey lid over the water, with hardly a ripple anywhere and pressure ticking upward. On Lake McKusick, work any hard bottom among the soft first. The productive run goes night into morning. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Lake McKusick is one of the Washington County waters in Minnesota. The surface lies 843 feet up. It measures about 45 acres, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. With about 1.5 miles of edge, you can try several depths in one session. It is low-lying compared with other Minnesota water we list. Start from Stillwater, 1.1 miles down the road. Saint Paul sits 16 miles out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. It sits near the edge of the county, so check which rules apply.
Open data we checked carries no depth for this water. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. County-wide records name bluegill, largemouth bass, brown trout and northern pike. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. On Lake McKusick a short move beats a long cast.
Climate normals give 72°F for July and 13°F for January. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near early April. Ice usually gives way near early April, and forms again about early December. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Lake McKusick.
No access rule appears in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Parking is mapped about half a mile from the bank. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. The nearest alternative is Lily Lake, 1 mile out. Nothing on Lake McKusick should be assumed from this page alone.
