A closed sky with even light today, with dead-still conditions with pressure dropping. Most of the action on Lake Itasca should come off windblown banks where food collects. Set the alarm around the night. Work the productive water thoroughly. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

In Minnesota, Lake Itasca falls inside Clearwater County. Everything around it is mixed forest. At 1,052 acres this is proper open water rather than a pond. Shoreline length is close to 13 miles, and each section fishes a little differently. It is among the larger waters listed here for Clearwater County. Supplies mean a trip to Park Rapids, 21 miles off. Bagley is 23 miles away, with Bemidji at 23 miles. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Sounding records show water to about 52 feet. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Across Clearwater County, recorded fish include bluegill, northern pike, largemouth bass and yellow perch. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Lake Itasca fishes better once you know its edges.
Climate normals give 67°F for July and 4°F for January. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around mid April. Break-up near mid April, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Lake Itasca runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Expect a half a mile walk in from where the car goes. There is a toilet block some half a mile out. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Should this one be busy, Tamarack Lake is 0.7 miles off. Nothing on Lake Itasca should be assumed from this page alone.
