No direct sun expected today, with steady pressure of wind from the NNE as pressure builds. Give bays that hold the day's warmth the first hour at Lac La Croix. The morning is where the day comes good. Ride the conditions while they last. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Look for Lac La Croix in the Rainy River District part of Ontario. Elevation runs to 359 metres. Around 115.66 sq km of open water: conditions change from one end to the other. There is far more edge than the surface area suggests, thanks to the arms. It is the biggest water on our Rainy River District list. Ely is the closest place, 52 km off. Beyond it, Atikokan at 59 km and Babbitt at 72 km. No border sits close enough to matter.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. County-wide records name northern pike, smallmouth bass and yellow perch. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. At Lac La Croix the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Between January at about -16°C and July at about 19°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late April. On average, late April opens the water and late November closes it again. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. The season on Lac La Croix follows the weather closely.
The paperwork position is blank for this one. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Public data shows nothing built here, so treat the whole approach as informal. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Pocket Lake at 3.1 km is the sensible second choice. For Lac La Croix in particular, ask before you travel.
