A half-covered sky tonight, with a light chop building from the WNW with the barometer flat. Fish at Jam Lake should hold close to the seam between weed and open water. The strongest window is the middle of the day. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

You will find Jam Lake in Lake County, Minnesota. Everything around it is pine and birch. This is a pocket water of some 14 acres, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Lake County. Grand Marais at 35 miles is the nearest place to stop. After that come Ely at 42 miles and Babbitt at 50 miles. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Fish documented in Lake County include white sucker, yellow perch and northern pike. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. Jam Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
In an average year July sits at 64°F and January at 4°F. The season turns properly here, and fish follow it closely. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late April. Climate averages put the opening at about late April and the closing near mid November. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. The season on Jam Lake follows the weather closely.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. You can camp about half a mile away, going by the mapping. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Jig Lake, 0.2 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Rules at Jam Lake are worth checking on the day.
