Steady rain over the water today, with a persistent wind from the SSW as pressure builds. Activity on Jack Lake should centre on the calm side of the wind. The night is where the day comes good. Make the first hour count and build on it. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

In Minnesota, Jack Lake belongs to Cass County. The ground around here is rolling bush. It measures about 87 acres, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. Bank access stretches around 1.9 miles in total. For a base, Crosslake sits 22 miles out. The big place round here is Fargo, 121 miles distant. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Records held for Cass County cover largemouth bass, yellow perch, bluegill, walleye and northern pike. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Take Jack Lake a stretch at a time.
Climate normals give 68°F for July and 6°F for January. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough mid April. Averages suggest open water from about mid April through to roughly late November. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. That is the shape of the year on Jack Lake.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. A carry of half a mile from the nearest parking is the price of fishing here. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Should this one be busy, Girl Lake is 0.8 miles off. What applies at Jack Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
