A bright day with hardly any cloud, with a soft SSW wind and the barometer on the way down. Horseshoe Lake should fish best around any hard bottom among the soft today. The productive run goes night into morning. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Horseshoe Lake is one of the Big Stone County waters in Minnesota. It lies 1,056 feet above sea level. It measures about 37 acres, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. The whole outline is near 1.1 miles, and most of it is walkable. On size it sits at the modest end of our Big Stone County list. For supplies, Ortonville is 6.8 miles out. Appleton lies 15 miles off, Milbank another 17 miles. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Species logged across Big Stone County include common carp, yellow perch, walleye and black bullhead. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. On Horseshoe Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
The warmest month averages 72°F, the coldest about 10°F. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from early April. On average, early April opens the water and late November closes it again. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Expect Horseshoe Lake to follow that timing.
No access rule appears in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Should this one be busy, Peterson Lake is 1.5 miles off. Nothing here settles the position at Horseshoe Lake for certain.
