No direct sun expected today, with a useful ESE wind pushing food about with a softening glass. Give the first drop-off and weed lines the first hour at Hook Lake. Not a day the forecast likes; the night keeps a flicker of interest. Lower the pace and stay patient. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Otter Tail County in Minnesota is where Hook Lake sits. Around the bank it is mixed forest. With some 133 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. With 4.1 miles or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. Nearest town is Frazee, 9.8 miles off. For a city, Fargo is 45 miles off. A county line runs close by, so local bylaws can differ within a short drive.
Our records hold no depth for this water. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Records held for Otter Tail County cover largemouth bass, black crappie and walleye. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. Hook Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
In an average year July sits at 69°F and January at 5°F. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. After mid April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Averages place the thaw at mid April and the freeze at late November. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. Hook Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Bass Lake at 1 mile is the sensible second choice. For Hook Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
