Set in Cass County, Minnesota, this is Harlan Lake. The land about it is rolling bush. With some 49 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. A shoreline of some 1.2 miles keeps the choices simple. East Gull Lake is the closest place, 7.8 miles off. Baxter lies 11 miles off, Lake Shore another 11 miles. The line between counties passes nearby, which can change who manages the water.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Fish documented in Cass County include largemouth bass, yellow perch and bluegill. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Work Harlan Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Expect July to average close to 69°F, with January the cold end at about 7°F. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Ice is part of the season here, ending near mid April. The lid tends to go about mid April and return around late November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Harlan Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. The nearest alternative is Rice Lake, 0.9 miles out. Rules at Harlan Lake are worth checking on the day.
