Overcast skies today, with a whisper of wind from the SSW and pressure leaking away. Whatever swims in Hanks Lake should be near the calm side of the wind. The useful hours run night into morning. Trust the forecast and stay out through the window. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Hanks Lake is one of the Crow Wing County waters in Minnesota. The ground around here is lake country bush. It measures some 255 acres, and wind has room to build across it. The shoreline runs about 7.2 miles, so it pays to pick a stretch and stay with it. It ranks high for size among our Crow Wing County listings. For a base, Crosby sits 8.8 miles out. Beyond it, Brainerd at 14 miles and Aitkin at 15 miles. A border sits close enough to be relevant to the paperwork.
The basin has been measured to about 82 feet. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. County-wide records name largemouth bass, bluegill and yellow perch. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. Anyone new to Hanks Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Long-term averages put July at about 69°F and January near 7°F. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. Look for the thaw near mid April; the fishing lifts straight after. The season between ice runs from about mid April to late November. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Plan any trip to Hanks Lake around it.
The access position is unclear from public sources. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. The nearest alternative is Pine Lake, 0.4 miles out. What applies at Hanks Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
