Soft grey light all day today, with the water lying quiet and the barometer on the way down. Whatever swims in Granite Lake should be near structure within a cast of the bank. The day fishes best from night into morning. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Granite Lake is one of the Morrison County listings for Minnesota. The country here is rolling bush. Surface area runs to about 5 acres — small enough to read in one session. Our Morrison County list holds plenty of bigger water. The closest town, Pierz, is 2.4 miles distant. For a city, Minneapolis is 80 miles off. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Species logged across Morrison County include largemouth bass, bluegill, northern pike, black crappie and yellow perch. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Granite Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
The year swings from about 8°F in January to roughly 70°F in July. Winter shuts the surface down for months. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around mid April. In an average year the thaw lands around mid April and the freeze near late November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Plan around that when you fish Granite Lake.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Denger Lake, 3 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Check the position at Granite Lake before loading the car.
