A wet system passing over today, with a firm SE blow and the barometer on the way down. Start the search at Comstock Lake along the shaded margin through bright spells. One clear peak today: the night. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Minnesota holds Comstock Lake, in Saint Louis County. It stands 1,388 feet above sea level. This is sizeable water at about 267 acres, and a boat opens up most of it. Shoreline comes to about 2.8 miles, small enough to learn in a day. It ranks high for size among our Saint Louis County listings. The nearest place of any size is Hoyt Lakes, 21 miles away. Then Aurora, 21 miles, and Gilbert, 22 miles. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
The basin has been measured to about 29 feet. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. County-wide records name yellow perch, northern pike, white sucker, rainbow trout and walleye. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. Comstock Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
On the long-term average, July reads 65°F and January reads 4°F. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. After late April the shallows warm and the fish move up. The lid tends to go about late April and return around late November. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Comstock Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Access points are not mapped for this water, which suits people who like quiet. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. If the gate is shut, Hart Lake at 1.1 miles is the nearest alternative. Nothing on Comstock Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
