Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with a whisper of wind from the WNW with the glass on the way up. Start the search at Coles Lake along shallow cover and weed edges. A hard day on paper; the night edges the rest. Scale down and fish slowly. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Look for Coles Lake in Crow Wing County, Minnesota. The country here is lake country bush. Around 116 acres of surface means several distinct areas to work. The edge runs 1.7 miles or so, easy to work in an afternoon. Head to Crosby, 4.5 miles away, for anything you forgot. Beyond it, Crosslake at 9.9 miles and Breezy Point at 10 miles. No boundary runs near, so the county rules hold throughout.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Survey and observation records for Crow Wing County include largemouth bass, bluegill, yellow perch and northern pike. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. Coles Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
Between January at about 8°F and July at about 69°F, the water has a wide range to work through. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near mid April. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about mid April until roughly late November. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. Coles Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
We hold no note on access for this one. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. A toilet block sits half a mile away. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. State or provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Flynn Lake sits 0.9 miles off and takes the overflow. None of that is settled for Coles Lake in what we hold.
