Broken cloud drifting past the moon tonight, with a soft ESE wind with the glass slipping lower. Most of the action on Clifford Lake should come off the calm side of the wind. Plan around the stretch from the day. Change depth before you change anything else. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Look for Clifford Lake in the Douglas County part of Minnesota. This is rolling bush ground. Surface area is around 164 acres, which gives you real water without needing a boat. A shoreline of some 2.0 miles keeps the choices simple. Supplies mean a trip to Osakis, 2.1 miles off. The big place round here is Fargo, 106 miles distant. The boundary is near enough that local access rules are worth double-checking.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Species logged across Douglas County include largemouth bass, common carp, bluegill and yellow perch. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. On Clifford Lake a short move beats a long cast.
On the long-term average, July reads 71°F and January reads 9°F. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near mid April. The season between ice runs from about mid April to late November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Clifford Lake.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Osakis Wildlife Management Area, South Unit takes in this water; protected-area rules will apply. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Gulden Lake, 1.3 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Treat access at Clifford Lake as something to verify.
