A closed sky with even light today, with mild air moving in from the SSW and the barometer holding steady. Give reed fringes and open pockets the first hour at Churchill Lake. A long productive spell runs night into morning. Make the first hour count and build on it. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Churchill Lake lies within the bounds of Hubbard County, Minnesota. The bank gives way to pine and birch. It runs to roughly 59 acres — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. There is roughly 1.4 miles of shoreline here, which is a short walk end to end. The town to know is Park Rapids, 8.1 miles out. Menahga lies 20 miles off, Bemidji another 31 miles. This one is safely inside the county line.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Public occurrence data for Hubbard County names walleye, northern pike, black crappie and bluegill. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. At Churchill Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
The year swings from about 4°F in January to roughly 67°F in July. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. After mid April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Ice usually gives way near mid April, and forms again about mid November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Churchill Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. If the gate is shut, Crooked Lake at 0.9 miles is the nearest alternative. Rules at Churchill Lake are worth checking on the day.
