Broken cloud drifting past the moon tonight, with just enough WNW wind to ripple the surface and a rising glass. Fish at Chase Lake should hold close to the calm side of the wind. The evening is where the day comes good. Change depth before you change anything else. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Look for Chase Lake in Lake County, Minnesota. Everything around it is rolling bush. The water covers some 30 acres, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The full circuit measures close to 1.1 miles on foot. It sits higher than most water we list in Minnesota. The town to know is Grand Marais, 30 miles out. For a city, Thunder Bay is 79 miles off. No boundary runs near, so the county rules hold throughout.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Lake County records list white sucker, yellow perch, northern pike, rainbow trout and walleye among the fish reported. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. On Chase Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 63°F, while January sits near 5°F. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. The lid usually goes in late April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. From about late April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. The season on Chase Lake follows the weather closely.
No access rule appears in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Overnight stays are possible about half a mile out, where camping is mapped. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Pencil Lake, 0.6 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. The position on Chase Lake is worth confirming on the day.
