Showers crossing the water today, with a working SE breeze and the barometer on the way down. Fish at Caribou Lake should hold close to the calm side of the wind. A long productive spell runs night into morning. Make the first hour count and build on it. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Set in Cook County, Minnesota, this is Caribou Lake. The ground round it is mixed forest. About 257 acres, so local knowledge or a boat saves a lot of walking. Some 5.5 miles of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. Size puts it in the front rank of our Cook County list. Supplies mean a trip to Grand Marais, 21 miles off. After that come Neebing at 51 miles and Parkdale at 61 miles. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. County-wide records name white sucker, yellow perch, northern pike and rainbow trout. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Anyone new to Caribou Lake should walk it once before setting up.
On the long-term average, July reads 63°F and January reads 4°F. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around early May. From about early May to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. Caribou Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
The paperwork position is blank for this one. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Facilities include toilets around half a mile from here. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. If the gate is shut, Lizz Lake at 0.7 miles is the nearest alternative. Check the current arrangement for Caribou Lake.
