A closed sky with even light today, with a stiffish breeze from the N with a settled glass. The water to cover at Bug Lake is the weed line and any gaps in it. Make the evening the heart of the trip. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Set in Itasca County, Bug Lake is a Minnesota water. Height above sea level is 1,332 feet. At roughly 12 acres, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. It is a small entry by Itasca County standards. For supplies, Cohasset is 35 miles out. Then Grand Rapids, 39 miles, and Coleraine, 39 miles. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Itasca County records list yellow perch, largemouth bass, northern pike, bluegill and black crappie among the fish reported. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. Read Bug Lake before you fish it and the day goes better.
Climate records put July near 66°F and January near 4°F. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near mid April. Averages place the thaw at mid April and the freeze at mid November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Bug Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Nothing is listed nearby for parking or launching a boat. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. If the gate is shut, Lake Helen at 0.5 miles is the nearest alternative. None of that is settled for Bug Lake in what we hold.
