A closed sky with even light today, with a whisper of wind from the SE and pressure on the rise. Fish at Buck Lake should hold close to reed fringes and open pockets. The day holds up well from night into morning. Work the productive water thoroughly. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Buck Lake stands in Todd County, Minnesota. The ground around here is pine and birch. Around 58 acres of surface means several distinct areas to work. The full circuit measures close to 1.2 miles on foot. Long Prairie lies 11 miles from the water. Melrose follows at 14 miles, then Sauk Centre at 15 miles. A county line runs close by, so local bylaws can differ within a short drive.
The deepest measured water here is close to 45 feet. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Open biodiversity records for Todd County list largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, northern pike and yellow perch. The county list is broader than any single water. Buck Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
Expect July to average close to 71°F, with January the cold end at about 9°F. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near mid April. Break-up near mid April, freeze-up near late November: that is the shape of an average year. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. The season on Buck Lake follows the weather closely.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. There is a car park half a mile from the bank. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. The nearest alternative is Mountain Lake, 1.4 miles out. Signs at Buck Lake carry more weight than any list.
