Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with enough NNE wind to stack food downwind with the glass holding level. Most of the action on Brown Lake should come off sheltered bays and points. Make the middle of the day the heart of the trip. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Brown Lake falls in Saint Louis County, part of Minnesota. Elevation runs to 1,168 feet. It measures about 68 acres, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. The edge runs 1.9 miles or so, easy to work in an afternoon. 29 miles away sits Fort Frances, the nearest town. For a city, Thunder Bay is 163 miles off. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Surveys put the deepest water at about 31 feet. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Across Saint Louis County, recorded fish include yellow perch, northern pike and white sucker. The county list is broader than any single water. At Brown Lake light and wind decide more than tackle does.
Expect July near 66°F and January near 4°F on the long-run figures. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Once it clears, about late April, the fishing comes on quickly. Ice clears near late April and comes back about late November in a typical year. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. That is the shape of the year on Brown Lake.
The access position is unclear from public sources. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. You can camp about half a mile away, going by the mapping. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. For a change of water, Oslo Lake is 0.8 miles distant. None of that is settled for Brown Lake in what we hold.
