Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a mirror surface most of the day and pressure easing off. The water to cover at Brown Lake is structure within a cast of the bank. Block out the hours from night into morning. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Brown Lake is a Hubbard County water, Minnesota side. Height above sea level is 1,365 feet. About 21 acres of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. It is a small entry by Hubbard County standards. Start from Bemidji, 14 miles down the road. Park Rapids follows at 25 miles, then Bagley at 26 miles. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Open biodiversity records for Hubbard County list walleye, northern pike and black crappie. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Fish Brown Lake where the bottom changes rather than where it looks deep.
The year swings from about 4°F in January to roughly 67°F in July. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Break-up comes around mid April, and the run that follows is short and strong. On average, mid April opens the water and mid November closes it again. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. It holds true on Brown Lake more years than not.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Brokaw Lake sits 1.6 miles off and takes the overflow. Check the current arrangement for Brown Lake.
