A grey, even sky over the water, with a steady ENE wind with the barometer flat. Give points where shallow meets deep the first hour at Blocknic Lake. Quiet conditions all day, with the night marginally better. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Set in Mahnomen County, Minnesota, this is Blocknic Lake. The country round it is mixed forest from end to end. At roughly 17 acres, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. It is a small entry by Mahnomen County standards. Supplies mean a trip to Mahnomen, 10 miles off. Detroit Lakes is 25 miles away, with Fosston at 28 miles. Rules can differ a short way off, since the county line is near.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. County-wide records name rainbow trout, white sucker, northern pike, bluegill and yellow perch. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. Anyone new to Blocknic Lake should walk it once before setting up.
On the long-term average, July reads 68°F and January reads 5°F. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around mid April. On average, mid April opens the water and mid November closes it again. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. Plan around that when you fish Blocknic Lake.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Rules differ from one water to the next round here. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Failing this one, try Squirrel Lake, 0.4 miles away. For Blocknic Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
