Soft grey light all day today, with a mirror surface most of the day and pressure on the rise. The water to cover at Blackwater Lake is the shallows early and the drop later. Little to get excited about, though the morning holds a sliver of promise. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short.

Out in Itasca County, Minnesota, sits Blackwater Lake. The land about it is rolling bush. It measures some 613 acres, and wind has room to build across it. Some 7.2 miles of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. On our Itasca County list it sits near the top for size. Cohasset sits 2.2 miles from the bank. Grand Rapids lies 6.5 miles off, Coleraine another 11 miles. The boundary is close enough to be worth checking before you fish.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Open biodiversity records for Itasca County list yellow perch, largemouth bass, northern pike, bluegill and black crappie. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Blackwater Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Seasonal averages run from 5°F in January up to 67°F in July. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around mid April. Climate figures give an open season running mid April to late November. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. Expect Blackwater Lake to follow that timing.
Public data does not answer the access question here. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Guile Lake, 1.1 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Check the position on Blackwater Lake before loading the car.
